CHRISTMAS SHOPPING & CUSTOMER SERVICE

The question: What can Christmas shopping and customer service possibly have in common?

The answer: In both, knowing personality styles helps one do a better job.

Think of it; behavior style training gained to help people better serve their customers, can come in really handy when one is selecting the right gift for Uncle Harry or Sister Sue. As a reminder to help you:

The dominant, results-oriented person on your list is going to prefer a no-nonsense, practical gift.

The conscientious, analytical perfectionist really appreciates gifts that neatly fit into a purpose.

Reminder: The ideal gift may fluctuate depending on how the person�s strongest style interacts with their secondary strongest style on their assessment � most people are blends of two or three styles with one style ranging from being slightly predominant to very predominant.

THE PFEFFERNEUSSE LESSON

When my children were growing up, I thought traditions were important, so I started a Tree trimming tradition of music, eggnog and pfefferneusse cookies. As told in our new book, Burnt Toast & Jam, every year I would bring out the eggnog and cookies and we would immerse ourselves sipping eggnog, eating cookies, and delighting in the joyous creation of yet another beautiful Christmas tree.

Years later, when my daughter was in college, she came home for the weekend to help me put the tree up. As we were finishing the tree and about to jump into the eggnog and pfefferneuse, she got very serious and said she had something to tell me. Now when your college student daughter looks at you in the eye and speaks with that serious tone, your heart kind of comes to a stop and fear takes over. I sat down to prepare for whatever I was about to hear. Then she told me, �Mom, I have never liked pfefferneusse cookies.� I was speechless; all those years my daughter had endured pfefferneuse cookies lovingly and in silence, rather than spoil my tradition (we could have switched cookies) or hurt my feelings! What an example of unselfish giving.

As I reflect on this, it comes to me that most of us today live in the kingdom of me, myself, and I. We are quick to rebuke others, quick to say, �I don�t want to ,�� I don�t like��or �I hate those� -- all with the air of entitlement and self-absorption, placing ourselves first, rather than caring about the feelings of others. Unselfish giving�.h-m-m-m, isn�t that what Christmas is all about? The next time you are tempted to retreat to the kingdom of me, myself and I; take the opportunity to give love instead, remember a little girl and pfefferneusse cookies -- after all, isn�t that the message from Bethlehem?

The best gifts aren�t always under the Christmas tree.

GIVING THE GIFT OF YOU

It seems to me that terrorists can take a vacation and just be patient. In our society today we seem to be doing a bang up job of prematurely killing ourselves. In essence, most of us are committing suicide through the food choices we make, the cigarettes we smoke, and the life style we lead.

A great Christmas gift idea? Give your loved one a hand written love letter committing yourself to giving up that old habit and replacing it with a healthier choice that will increase your chances for more Christmases together. Ask for their support.
