HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR HEART?

Last Sunday, my husband and I helped at a local home for the elderly. Our job, as volunteers, was to help the residents get to Sunday Service in the Chapel. A very special person, Lucy, was among the residents. She is in her mid-nineties and has been blind since birth. She had been a neighbor and friend to my late mother-in-law who would often tell us about the things she did.

For years, I remember town people commenting that Lucy was walking into town with her cane and seeing-eye dog. She always seemed to be on the go. Sunday when we saw her, she was sitting in the commons area busily folding towels and adding them to her neatly stacked pile. she Kudos for Lucy!

We all like to think that we will be active like this when we are 90. Think again.

A Florida physician reported this week that there were an alarming number of heart attacks among younger people. Hospitals are now seeing at least one heart attack victim a week who is under the age of 45. This used to be unheard of � heart attacks typically were associated with people 65 and older. Even more alarming is that with our online youth�s consumption of fatty fast foods and lack of exercise, he is estimating it won�t be long before the heart attack age dives to the 25 year old age group.

If you think you are overweight, women should aim for a waist of less than 35 inches; guys for a waist of less than 40 inches. According to the American Heart Association excessive waist circumference is a high risk indicator for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Going green is about more than the environment.

It is a great suggestion for our daily menu as well.

KEEP YOUR HEART DANCING

Just before one of my programs began I noticed one of the attendees was a gentlemen in a wheelchair. Since my program was going to include teaching the audience how to shimmy, I introduced myself to him and explained the exercise I would be doing. I was, in fact, exploring with him what role I could have him play so he wouldn�t feel excluded. To my surprise, he was quick to exclaim, Shimmy? You want to see a shimmy? Watch this! While sitting in his wheelchair, he managed to rhythmically fling his chair back and forth as he put his whole body to work. Wow! In the program, I told everyone we had the King of the Shimmy among us and introduced him. The audience then watched in disbelief as he showed everyone what he could. . . . . .So much for any excuse we may have about sitting too much!

Most of us spend a lot at our computer; almost like we are chained to our desk for the day. Yes, we can get up at lunch time and breaks � but what about in between? Here are a few ways to keep that heart pumping and feeling more energized even if done just twice a day:

- Ferris wheel ride. Pick up your pen and make large arm circles with it. Then transfer the pen to the other hand and make large arm circles. Change the pen back and forth as you go. Think of it as giving your pen a Ferris wheel ride.

- Shoulder roll combinations. Roll both to the back 5 times, then 5 times alternating

- The bumper bounce. Squeeze your buttock cheeks together and then tighten one cheek, then the other. Create your own rhythm!

Granted this will work best when not waiting on a customer.

GIVE THE VALENTINE OF LAUGHTER

The next time you feel those sparks of anger starting to fume � STOP! Instead, try to think on the brighter side. Flexing your funny bone can give the most effective results of all.

STOP and think:

n What is the irony of this?

n This could be worse, how?

n Where�s the silver lining in this is?

While you�re landing the fun twist, be sure to be speaking from an assumed common ground about the situation from which both can spring a recovery.

Start the pattern of looking at life with a comic vision. The only rule � You have to have heart. Never use humor to hurt anyone. Humor works when it is crafted to highlight and give something a funny twist. Don�t get mad, get funny. Give the gift of laughter.

n Save your bubble wrap! It�s a great stress reliever. Pop it with your fingers, knees and toes. Dance on it. Pop it in unison to the beat of music! Pop goes the worries!

n Depending on your budget, buy a red rose or bag of children�s little valentines and leave on one everyone�s desk.

SNAP YOUR BAD HABIT AWAY!

It�s simple and it works! If one of your 2010 goals is to overcome a bad habit, here's a way to do it! A rubber band on the wrist is an effective reminder to help you get rid of your bad habit. So often, we are unaware that we are even indulging in a bad habit. The first step to overcoming it? Become aware that you are doing it�from nail biting, to swearing, to rudeness, to a multitude of other undesirable actions. When you have the thought or catch yourself falling off the wagon�Snap it! Even better, if you share your plan with your spouse or friend, your verbalization of your commitment to them will re-enforce your desire to achieve your goal. The bonus: They�ll be happy to help you stay on track�they may even offer to snap it!

KICKING THE SPENDING HABIT

For all of those who are addicted to the good life of the 80�s and 90�s (and that�s most of us!) � there�s aid on the way to help create a thriftier mindset in these challenging times.

I found three books that I recommend to anyone trying to just improve their financial situation; looking for work; or are in need of help in getting their life thoughts together. The first two are by Author Larry Winget who is best described as a Harley maverick and businessman who tells it like it is, direct and no holds barred in his easy reads.

Both of books are easy reads that are packed with often unconventional insights and tons of tips.

The third book is Laid Off? Don�t Stress! - Author Kitty Wiemelt, which provides the experiences of 21 people who encountered unexpected career transitions along with their lessons learned and tips. Whether you have been laid off or are helping someone else transition, Kitty�s book has helpful information.

POSITIVITY & PERSISTENCE ARE KEY

1. Let your light shine. When creating a resume, make an achievement-based resume and don�t be shy. (Google online for more information)

2. When you do not receive responses from your resumes, do not take it personal. Author Kitty Wiemelt concurs that it most likely has nothing to do with your resume or application. If you�ve had an interview and they don�t call you, you call them. Find out what you can do better next time. Be persistent.

3. Choose to be happy. Listen to uplifting music, listen to motivational tapes, count your blessings, hug your kids. Watch uplifting/educational television. Your voice and attitude will reflect your mood. (Remember: garbage in/garbage out/dump the garbage!) Positivity will lift you up.

4. Find reasons to laugh. It will reduce your body�s stress levels and boost your creativity�and make you more pleasant to be around.

5. Don�t discount any idea because you don�t know enough about it. Be a sponge. Be eager to learn as much about everything as you can. Research and ask questions.

6. Share your goals with others who support you and believe in you. Brainstorm ideas.

7. Make a list of people whom you know that are well connected and you could comfortably ask for insights they may have for you. If you are respectful of their time, and have specific questions, you will find most are more than willing to help.

8. Craft your 60-second commercial. What is it you want to do and how can you help organizations?

9. Practice the 4 N�s: Network, Network, Network and Never give up.

10. Help someone else. Probably nothing will restore belief in yourself and empower you, as

doing random acts of kindness for others.

To achieve, use words like hope, belief, faith, confident, trust, and be persistent.

HOLIDAY PARTY � IMAGE COUNTS

According to the John Tesh�s radio show, 618,000 employees are fired annually as a result of messing up at the company holiday party. Yikes, that is a scary number!

As you are getting ready for your office event, remember that you are the billboard for the person you want to be. Your choices will either work for you or against you. While office party settings and expectations may vary, always take the conservative road. This holiday don�t sabotage yourself. Use this party as an opportunity to get to know others better and to give coworkers and management the opportunity to get to know you and your strengths better.

Tips:

-- Wear appropriate attire.

-- Guys: polish those shoes; and press those shirts.

-- Gals: cover the cleavage and remember a dash of chic goes along way. Let �classic� predominate.

-- Review the names of the people who will be attendance and find out a little bit about them, ex., What was his wife�s name? Where did they move from?

-- Pull out 1 or 2 favorite jokes or a few great one liners, and practice them as you are getting dressed. Be sure they are tasteful and non-offensive. If not comfortable with jokes, think of some interesting topics of conversation or recall some favorite stories.

-- Use self-Control. Probably one of the biggest pitfalls people experience is drinking too much. Set Your limit and stick to it. This might be the best time to choose a soda. Remember that this night is more about your future than it is anything else.

-- Never ignore anyone.

-- Focus on making others feel comfortable. Be quick to introduce yourself to others and then introduce them to your friends.

-- Give a toast. When or if the appropriate time presents itself, offer a toast. It doesn�t have to be complex; keep it simple. Ask all to raises their glasses and toast the holiday season �Here�s to a jolly holiday and a happy new year. May we continue to hold our pay checks so dear. There are several other toasts listed below under Leadership 101. The key to creating a great toast � find a toast you like and replace words with words that fit your group. Non-drinkers? Use your water glasses.

-- Always shake hands and say thank you to the host(s) before you leave.

Your future depends upon your choices; make good ones.

CAN SILLY BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY?

We received a letter from one of our readers saying she had been written up for a disciplinary action at work for being silly. She is a supervisor who always exceeds her sales quotas and has good team rapport. She was baffled by this action.

So what should she do?

We know that health-wise being silly is a good thing and it can be a lot of fun. In fact, we encourage it as stress relief from life�s serious side. (Add a dose to your Christmas season!) However, as in most things, when overdone it can create problems especially when you need to be taken seriously. Most people have the ability to be silly at times when it�s appropriate, and then serious when the situation calls for it. Each takes a whole different set of verbal and body language skills. The tough part comes when being silly comes so natural, especially when faced with a superior who�s behavior style is one of being results oriented and sees humor as being non-productive.

The key for success on this one is to be intuitive to the situation. When you need to be in your serious, business mode, lower your voice, slow your pace, stand erect, and generate profound concern. This is also where the image of you can play a role. What you wear plays a large part in how others perceive you. A crazy, trendy purse or other attire choices may be sending silly signals. For business, keep your look conservative with straight classic lines.

Because you want to show a sincere concern for doing the best job possible, requesting an appointment to learn what prompted the action would be appropriate. Once you know exactly what the issues are, it will be easier for you to address them and will send the message that you do take your work seriously.

We all want to be taken for the person we want to be.

- Have each post favorite a favorite Christmas memory picture on the bulletin board.

- Declare a Christmas sock day.

STOP WHINING / START COUNTING

Thanksgiving is upon us and yes, most would agree that times have been tough here �or have they? Let�s click a mental �refresh� through the eyes of others and see our bountiful blessings.

As a result of a church partnership mission project, our community had two gentlemen, Elirehema and Tareto, from.Tanzania visit our town last month. What is their home like? Their people are starving due to the drought, they have little water, they live in homes they have built of brick using mud and termite hills. Tareto had walked two hours each day to get to school and two hours back. They were in awe at the homes we live in, disbelief when their hosts turned on a faucet and out came water, and then there was the shower, the microwave, refrigerator and the vacuum. They saw fields of plentiful corn which is used to feed our cows (not people) and in the grocery store they were shocked to see we had canned food for our dogs. They saw the city lights of Milwaukee and experienced a ride in a strange box we call an elevator. Their eyes were filled with realities of our unimaginable world.

Tareto commented that their villagers had heard of these things but believed them to be made-up stories. Then he said:

Now I can tell them these things ARE real. I have seen them with my own eyes.

PLEASE PASS THE TURKEY... & Your Leadership

This past week I heard the saying Your child is you, be the person you want them to be.

Wow, what a great thought.

How rare is the sound of pleasantries on any given day; yet where better for our children --and all of us--to benefit from good examples than at Thanksgiving. In a time when vulgarities are spewed at us from all directions, maybe, just maybe, our efforts will cause ripples of change in our society and the next generation will be able to ride the tide of a better place. So it behooves us to buck up and put on our leadership shoes. Let politeness and gratitude abound! In today's fast paced world, we don't have many events that provide such a wonderful opportunity to promote respect and love for one another as the Thanksgiving Dinner.

In addition to the menu you choose, here are some of the other things you might want to serve this year :

-- Warm welcome: Graciously welcome your guests by name. (The sweetest sound ever heard)

-- An inquisitive heart: Show interest in all, the elders and the quiet ones are often overlooked. (Use "what" type questions, ask their expertise, remember "still waters run deep")

-- At the table: A dinner prayer. (Sample below.) If you don't wish to say the prayer, pre-arrange for someone else, giving them time to prepare.

-- After the prayer: Have each person go around and say what they are most thankful this year. To add something a little different, add.....as an American.

-- For dessert: Pick a question and have another round robin: What do none of us know about you? Or, what is the one thing you appreciate about the person on your right?

This not only gives everyone an opportunity to share but may open doors of knowledge that otherwise would have remained silent.

No matter how large or small, make your Thanksgiving meal a treasure for all.

THE IMAGE SCALE AND YOU

In our Success Seminar on image management we use an Image Success scale. In order to reach goals, one wants to fall within the 7-10 range of a particular category. There are three considerations for each category: Updated & current; Neat, pressed & tailored; Complimenting your body type; Defining your message.

For example, let�s take casual day. When a company okays a Casual Day, you have two choices: �Shlumpy� and sloppy or neat and with pride. Unless it has been specified that you will be moving and doing actual dirty work, you will want to appear at the office on casual day looking your best in your casual wear. In other words, if you are wearing blue jeans, wear clean, darker colored with little fading and without holes. Leave the tennis shoes in the closet. Instead, opt for a polished leather casual shoe. If wearing a shirt, pick a nice one � not the one you might wear to clean the garage out on Saturday. Depending on your work environment, you might still want to keep your sport coat handy for any surprise meeting or customer.

If you think it could need pressing, it does.
Guys: Leather watch bands, belts, socks & shoes should be the same color
Guys, instead of a golf shirt, consider a mock turtleneck knit. It is a shiek casual look.
Gals: Cleavage is a corporate killer. While the trendy edge of today�s fun fashions seemingly defy all traditional propriety, credibility and power on the job stem from a female�s ability to compete on equal ground as our male counterparts.

One of your greatest powers is the power of choice, use it to your advantage

-- Great Meeting kick-off / Break room folly OR a Thanksgiving Day activity: Have everyone invent a word and write it down on a piece of paper and fold. Place them all in a pile. Each person selects a piece of paper, and defines the word convincingly, & giving a sample use in a sentence. Creativity knows no limits. Hilarious fun!

-- �Build a turkey� contest: Provide each person with a potato to take home and decorate; then display at their desk. The winner get a prize.

LIKE, ARE YOU GUILTY?

When our kids were in high school, we noticed the growing trend by teens of using the word like as a filler word. It used to drive us crazy. Every other word was like. Well, I think we are in the midst of like mania. When used as an adjective, like is defined as meaning similar or comparable. The use if it is rampant and stands out even more than the annoying over use of ah-h-h as a filler word.

Listen to the words you use. Are you hearing the word like? If you are aware of it, chances are you speak it much more than you know. This is one habit you want to nip in the bud. It�s a verbal crippler which drives many crazy and it undermines your efforts to be mature and professional. The next time you feel the impulse to say like; STOP and just finish the sentence. For example: They are so, like, out of sight in their prices. Instead simply say, They are so out of sight in their prices.

The words we choose define who we are

MOVE FROM PBS TO MTV WITH BUZZWORDS

Speaking the same language as your colleagues isn�t always easy, especially when it crosses generational lines. The truth is we DO NOT speak the same language. Every generational group has their own language interpretations. Yet, we can easily bridge some of those gaps by jumping on board with current buzzwords :

Boil the Ocean: When trying to accomplish too broad of a goal in one project, i.e., Let�s not boil the ocean; instead we need to take this one step at a time.

Talking to The Dog: Thinking it through by talking it through out loud. We have all used this technique of exploring ideas; now it has a name! The next time you are handed a dilemma you can respond with, I have to talk to the dog (or TTD) and will get back to you!

Personal Stimulus Recovery Plan: A vacation. Also known as a "personal stimulus program."

Oblication: Vacation time spent managing personal obligations, such as taking time off from work to move your son into his dorm at college.

The melding of the generations comes when we put ourselves in the other's shoes.

FASHION MYTH ALERT

To look at the fashion magazines, one would be prone to say that when it comes to fashion, anything goes. NOT! This myth can sabotage your efforts to find a job. Red flags should go off in the minds of career-oriented adults. In today�s tight job market with everyone�s striving for a little success at something, a professional image tips the odds in your favor. . Recently a friend was experienced being in a Group interview. She and five others were interviewed at the same time. What she described was typical of what I am hearing everywhere. One had numerous tattoos exposed; one person was wearing flip flops; and another actually put her foot up on the chair and sat with the I am the Queen aura. What were they thinking!!! Quick Tips for the Interview:

- Prepare Your Mind: Know the organization and how you can help it.

- Prepare Your Image: Is your image congruent with who you want to be?

- Be 15 minutes early.

- Be courteous to everyone, this includes the receptionist and cleaning lady.

- Have some good questions in mind.

- Watch your body language� Be confident and poised.

- Follow up.

You are the billboard for the person you want to become.
