PLEASE PASS THE OLYMPIC JAM

With the Olympic games underway, the countries once again unite with the common bond of showing off their best. Every time I hear that Star Spangled Banner, my heart does a little leap of pride, almost as if I had something to do with the athletes winning their medals. I think it just has to do with being proud to be an American.

The best commercial so far? It has to be Visa's "Go World" commercial on the reason that the Olympics pulls the heartstrings and has such wide global attention e— it’s the one bond that we all share — that of being human. While nationalism definitely stirs one’s pride, according to the commercial the deeper draw to the Olympics is not because we are necessarily a member of any one community, but it lies in the Spirit of Humanity joining together in one common celebration of human excellence. Despite the agonies and pain felt (the burnt toast) along the way. It just doesn’t get any better than this ultimate dose of jam.

FALLING A PORK CHOP SHORT?

Lou Holtz always said, “Preparedness is everything.” We certainly know that to be true in the Olympic games but what about in our daily lives?  With such tight schedules and so much on our plates, I think most of us come up a bit short more often than we care to admit. Whether it’s researching a potential client company or forgetting the snacks for the kids, being prepared just doesn’t just “happen.” It takes time and effort. Here are a few insights that may be helpful:

  1. Try not to over schedule your life. Time deprivation is almost a plague today and trying to keep your life balanced isn’t always easy. Each month purposely leave open spaces on your weekend calendars in order to allow yourself time to catch up and prepare for the upcoming weeks(s).

  1.  Schedule “preparation“ time in your day planner. Include a slot of  open time to take care of the unexpected things that come up. Also be sure to include ample travel time to and from your appointments so you aren’t caught short.

  1. Never assume anything. Develop the habit of thinking “what if….” If you tend to expect the unexpected, you will be more ready for it; saving time, frustration,  pain or even embarrassment.

  1. Designate a time frame to use as an opportunity for quiet time to clear your mind and let those ideas manifest. It might be 10 minutes at night after the kids are in bed; while you are exercising, soaking in the tub or in the morning while you are driving to work. Try thisturn off the car radio while driving and just have silence in the car. Let your mind wander. It just might tell you all sorts of things you wouldn’t have normally thought of.

  1. Don’t procrastinate. Just do it.
“Luck is the intersection where preparedness meets opportunity”

YOUR IMAGE: ENTHUSIASM OR INDIFFERENCE?

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." Enthusiasm is the feeling of excitement and eagerness that propels action. The opposite is something we see far too much — indifference. Both are contagious. One results in success; the other is mediocrity. The image of one being enthusiastic sends a message of confidence, eagerness to achieve, and a resounding ability to influence or lead others.

In order to be enthusiastic, one has to act with enthusiasm. The truth of the matter is that you FEEL the way you act. If you act tired, you will feel tired. Act excited; you will feel excited. Being enthused is a state of mind. It can be generated with self-talk and positive thinking. When you get up in the morning, say to yourself, "It’s going to be a good day!" You will be committing to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

More tips for getting ENTHUSED:

·        Exercise regularly and eat healthy — your energy will soar.

·        Count your blessings — say them out loud or write them down.

·        Set goals — this will help you focus on what’s important.

·        Make a list of past accomplishments — you’ll be amazed how far you’ve come.

·        Have a sense of purpose.

·        Help someone.

"Think of enthusiasm like jam; spread it everywhere you can.

ADDING WORKPLACE FUN

--  Have a list a week contest.  “5 ways to  get promoted... impress your boss, …loose weight while working,   or 6 Top reasons to....go bald..... take the elevator...   Etc.  You get the
idea. Keep it humorous & kind, list the funny & absurd.
--  Start a back rub chain
or here's one for the really brave:
--  Page yourself on the loudspeaker (don't disguise your voice)

Hot off the press!   This is a light read that you'll enjoy.  The value of the stories in this book for you—and your friends—will be when the stories help you to clarify and identify some of the meanings in your life.  Burnt toast happens.  Sometimes it’s the small things that cause stress, sometimes it’s really big things that impact our life forever.  Every time the toast is burnt, scrape it off, pile on the jam – and find the joy in the blessings!

A TIP FOR A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION.  When you find yourself caught in  a difficult conversation, a great tip to remember:  Paraphrase what has just been said.    Example: "If I understood you correctly, you said...." or  "Let me make sure I understand what you just said......" This makes certain that everyone understands and there is no miscommunication.   If everyone agrees on what has been said, hey, they've already agreed on something!
