ITS MORE THAN JUST LUCK

One day, my phone rang just before noon. It was a panicked meeting planner whose organization had a banquet that evening and the speaker for the banquet was grounded at an airport out East due to bad weather. It just happened that my calendar was open that afternoon and I was able to step in at the last moment. I was happy to be able to help them out. In retrospect, I realize that I was able to accept the opportunity successfully because I keep masters of my handouts and had a good supply of program needs on hand. Since I had little time to prepare, it would have been easy for me to fall short. But three and a half-hours later, I was in my car with 130 customized handouts, give-aways, other program tools and products for sale. I was even on the phone doing organizational research during the drive.

At first I thought I was “lucky” to have added another engagement to my week. Then I realized it was an important lesson. While I was so very grateful for the phone call, it was really my state-of-preparedness that made it happen. On another day, it may have been a different story.

How many times do opportunities come knocking on our door — and for one reason or another — we don’t or aren’t able to respond? Do we feel we would fall short of expectations or in truth, are we just not prepared. Most often, we all get caught up in the “now” and fall short in our “long term” planning. We don’t even consider all the possibilities.

In your wildest dreams:

·        What do you wish would happen in your day?

·        What opportunity would you wish for in your life?

·        What do you need to do to be ready?

“Luck is the intersection where preparedness meets opportunity.”

FEELING OVERWHELMED?

There are times when we all feel we have so much to do that we can’t get anything done.

Here are 5 steps Rita Emmett suggests to take the STING out of being overwhelmed.

S    -     Select just one thing to do.
T    -     Time yourself. Set the timer for 1 hour to work on your project.
I     -     Ignore everything else that needs to be done.
N   -     No breaks till the timer dings at the end of the hour.
G   -     Give yourself a reward.

“If there is any one secret of effectiveness, it is concentration.

Effective executives do first things first and they do one thing at a time.”

                                                                                                                 Peter F. Drucker

ADDING WORKPLACE WELLNESS & FUN

·         Start a “Lighten Up” library in your breakroom – include books,
videos and a corkboard where people can post jokes, pictures, trivia.

·         Pick up a bag of little yellow rubber duckies. Pass out to colleagues with
a note attached – Have a ducky of day!

EXTEND YOUR EXPIRATION DATE!  In a study of seventysomethings, Australian researches found that those with the largest network of friends had the longest lease on life. For the average guy, this could add up to a 7 additional years of existence. Yes, some buddies may encourage risky behavior from time to time, but friendship ultimately provides more protection than peril. So try to learn a few new faces at work, greet people you pass on your daily walk or simply say “hey” to the neighbor you’re never met. You can all thank each other later.

TOASTS: LEADERSHIP 101

Business Luncheon

-         I raise a glass to business and to friendship, in the first may we prosper,
in the last may we find real wealth.”

-         To the middle of the day! May the worst part be over, and the best of the day still to come.

Chuckle for the Day

(Talk about generational perceptions!!)

It was Easter Sunday. Church was packed so Mom, Dad, 4 year old Ethan and little Clara, ended up sitting in the front row.  The loud organ music began, trumpets played heralding Easter’s celebration.  The choir, dressed in white robes and many with white hair, entered to the triumphant music. The choir procession filed up onto risers, singing gloriously.

Ethan leaned over to his mom and whispered:

Mom, are they all dead? Did they come down from heaven?
