6 STEPS FOR A SWEETHEART OF A LIFE

  1. Visualize your life goals – make a "collage" in your mind of where you will be one day, the vehicle you’ll drive, the family you want, your ideal retirement, etc. A great visual tecnique?  Buy an inexpensive scrapbook, start collecting pictures of things you want in your future. (magazine pictures/ newspaper headlines, etc.) Everytime you need a little motiviation boost and goal re-enforcement, look at your scrapbook. (This is a great activity for young teens to do.  It provides the basis for the "What you need to do to make it happen" conversations.
  2. Set a time frame with dates for overcoming your challenges and accomplishing needed steps.
  3.  Plan a reward system for yourself, then focus on it.
  4.  Fortify your will power with self-determination and self-talk. Write on a card your top thoughts that you need help with.
They might be things like:

o        I am going to …………

o        I am determined.

o        I will be focused.

o        I will be unrelenting.

o        I will be that person I want to be..

o        I want no regrets in the end.

o        I know that if it is to be, it is up to me.

o        I will succeed.

     5.    Start each day reading your commitments. Carry the card with you to repeat during the day on cue. For

example: Each time you turn the car key you might say: “I will be that person I want to be”. Each time

you turn on the shower:  “I am going to be phenomenal today. ”  Saying it out  loud sends a message to your

            brain and re-enforces your mindset.

6.  Be a “doer” not a procrastinator.

“When asked the greatest lesson he had learned in all of his years in the ministry, the Reverend Billy Graham did not recite long biblical passes.

He simply replied: “The brevity of life.”

SICK OF BEING OVER LOOKED?

Have you noticed that some people just seem to be so lucky. When they speak, people listen.  When they call on the phone, people respond.  When others want advice, they are the ones others go to. When promotions are handed out, they are the ones who get them.

It’s been said that "Luck is the intersection where opportunity meets preparedness."  Are you going to be ready for that next opportunity? If you are tired of feeling like you are a pork chop short when it comes to that value judgment of you, you need to read our Special Report:  Build Your Effectiveness and Power. YOUR DESK IMAGE IS TELLING ALL

Have you taken an objective look at your workspace lately?  Are there accumulations of family pictures, knick knacks and memorabilia?   It may be time for a spring shape up.  Consider this:

Personal items should be no more than 1/5 of all of the items in your work space.  If you make your office

too “homey” it says you are comfortable and there for the long haul, rather than striving for advancement.

Need a picture for your wall?   Rather a photo of your sweetie, it is better to frame and hang a copy of

your degree, certification or award earned.  It will tell your boss you are serious about your job.

Chronic clutter and paper piles can send red flags to your employer regarding your capabilities.

Managers/employers say an employee’s desk image can impact their decision on whether or not that person will receive a promotion.

“Perceptions are continually being made.  Is the perception of you congruent with your goals?”

THE INVISIBLE WORKER

Reports are coming in that there is a growing dilemma in the workplace. I call it the  Invisible Person Syndrome — experienced by the segment of employees more commonly known as the Baby Boomers.

Not too long ago, I delivered a speech to 300 women on the importance of a professional image. Before the program even began, a lady came up to me and asked if I would talk about how the maturing worker is treated at work and what they can do to make their presence noticed.  She went on to say, “I go to work every day and it’s like I’m not even there. When we’re in a meeting, my opinion is not asked. During casual conversations with my manager, he looks right past me to the younger workers.”

When the topic was mentioned in the presentation, it created a big stir. Hands went up like crazy. One lady reported having the urge of wanting to jump up and down screaming, “Hello, Hello, I’m here!” They were all wondering if there was something they could be doing to become visible again.

This is generational slamming — big time! It can be annoying and hurtful. A person’s productivity can be affected. It’s ironic that we are living in a time when leaders of organizations are trying to figure out ways to retain their boomer workers, and their own management is sabotaging their efforts. (A good session on Bridging the Generational Divides might be in order.)

We are currently working on a new Special Report to help boomer women overcome this Syndrome which seems to affect boomer women more than men.  It will provide details, specifics and how to’s that every boomer woman can use — watch for it in upcoming weeks. In the meantime, here are a few general tips to help Boomers maintain their visibility:

  1. Don’t take it personal.
  2. Avoid looking ‘dated’ (We’ll tell you how in our Special Report).
  3. Read the magazines and websites that the younger generations read. (We’ll tell you the hot ones)
  4. Let your willingness to help and/mentor others be known.
  5. Instead of “Why?” practice thinking “Why not?”
  6. Join in or get on the planning committee for company socials/events.
  7. Hone your humor skills.

“Age is the great equalizer; unfortunately we’re not all equal at the same time”

Regardless of what end of the age spectrum you are on, our Special Report “Gener-Vision™ Begins With Me” will help bridge those generational divides and change those strangers into sweethearts. Have your copy today by ordering at:  www.kinza.net/shop/index.html#reports .

 ADDING THE WORKPLACE FUN

n      Make a sign and create a “No Whining” Zone.  Offenders pitch into the break room treat fund.

n      Buy a bag of children’s valentines.  Attach them to your memo’s or Meeting Agenda.

n      The snap, crackle, pop you hear in the morning may not be your cereal.  To loosen those joints and get rid of the stress, hold a break room “shimmy-fest”.

A SWEETHEART GIFT FOR THE KIDS:

A recent extensive survey of 1,280 people, ages 13-24 by the Associated Press Asked” What makes you happy.”

As you might expect answers like sex, drugs, hip hop, but the results were quite different. The top answer:

Spending time with my family. The second popular answer was spending time with friends.    Nearly three-quarters of young people surveyed say their relationship with their parents make them happy.

GOING FOR A JOB INTERVIEW?  A GREAT TIP FOR YOU.

Jerry Stricker, a  Manager at a Wisconsin Walgreens chain, recently told me  there was one requirement he always insisted on when he was selecting  new employees – are you ready for this?  The one thing he looks for?    They have to be able to smile.   How to work the cash register, take inventory and other tasks can be taught.  You can’t teach someone how to smile.    If you can smile, you win.   A great lesson for all of us, thanks Jerry.
