Look at it with no emotion attached. Need to come up with ideas? How can we get everything done without it? According to new research, much better. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>  In her researched-based book : Conquer Cyberoverload, Joanne Cantor,PH D. is giving us the heads up: Our brains were not made to multi-task.  According to molecular biologist, John Medina, when we dual task- we are giving it our half. When we multi-task , our attention is split up into pieces, nothing gets our 100% attention, instead our brain is busy  task switching back and forth, taking turns zoning out.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> While we may think we find multi-tasking stimulating, a UCLA study shows it results in a lower level of understanding. Whether it is that project at work, a customer or our children, we zone out.  The consequences of this is lower productivity and much higher stress levels.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> -         Be Aware.   When you feel yourself being pulled in different directions, take a deep breath, prioritize and focus on the priority.   Be present in the moment. Give that moment 100% of your attention. If you are saying Now where was I? you are task switching too much.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> -         Resist the urge. Much like overcoming any addiction, learn to resist the urge! The internet is adept at sucking us in  to web browse, check scores, YouTube or constantly check emails. Whatever your attraction is, set a structured time when you will be able to catch up those things.  Develop trust and patience.  The information will not go away. They will still be there tomorrow.  The thirst for instant information can become habit forming and holds consequences.<o:p></o:p>     <o:p></o:p> -         Schedule self-induced blackouts Intel now schedules one morning a week where incoming mail is shut down and employees minds are freed up to focus on tasks at hand. Set times for your own blackouts. Rather than constantly being connected, check your emails and/or phone messages every 2 hours.  For those "must have connections," create separate email address. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> How sweet is the single task.!<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> DUMP THE TIME SUCKERS<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Beware of  time suckers.  A time sucker might be an old habit, a routine you do just because youve always done it that way,  an outgrown organization or it could even be a person. Time suckers will suck your energy and give very little in return.  Re-evaluate.  It may be time to move on<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> We will not be receiving any more time..<o:p></o:p> Use yours wisely.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR CHILDREN?<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> We tell our child not to hit. Then we allow them to sit in front of a screen and train their brains to hit, abuse and kill. What kind of parents would do that? Not many if they understood the harm it was doing to their kids.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> When an area of the brain called premotor cortex sees an action performed, it prepares to perform that same action. Its what makes a baby return mommys smile. When one watches television or computer games, the same things happens. If it is violence and hostility, mirror neurons in our brains practice those actions and a pathway is created. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Hows that for a scary thought? Remember, this also includes all of those sexual scenes and innuendos that we think our kids dont catch. They were chatting and crunching popcorn, mostly oblivious to the patriotic tribute. As I looked around, I couldnt help but think - WHERE were the leaders??? Who was setting an example? The next time you hear the Star Spangled Banner suck it up, and belt it outproudly and boldly. WOW! This is an attribute they can be proud of. The motto given to their generationDo It Big and Do It with Honorspeaks volumes for the Legacy they are leaving for future generations.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> So what can be done on a personal level to impact the lives of our youth? I like to share the following story of a dear friend of mine. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> My friends grandson had been asked to write a college paper about someone who had most influenced his life (outside of his own parents). He wrote on his Grandfather. It seems his Grandpa Jim had taken him out for a boat ride one summer day shortly after his high school graduation. Grandpa then cut the motor and gave his grandson a present. It was a plaque with the poemWhat it means to be a <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Man.</st1:place></st1:State> It turned into much more than just a boat ride. Jim and his grandson had a meaningful conversation as they discussed what the words on the plaque meant and Grandpa explained the meanings of words like integrity and honor.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Now, several years later, that framed copy of this poem hangs on a wall outside the door of a man named Jim, in an Alzheimers ward.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In this life we cannot do great things. Too often we repeat the same old patterns and then wonder why nothing new comes our way.  Who do you need to be talking with?    Explore new horizons.   How can you position yourself as an expert?<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <![if !supportLists]>-         <![endif]>Discipline: Have a sense of Purpose and focus on it.  Resist the temptation to clean or whatever it is you do when you want to procrastinate. Yikes it can drive you willies! This year more than ever we are also seeing more and more new women’s shoes with the smaller heels. A person’s shoes can be annoying to others if they are noisy. Depending on the message you need to send, choose dress shoes that support the fact that you are serious about your work.  Because of all the choices, women need to be a bit more selective.  Closed toe and heel pumps are premiere examples of meaning business. There are many styles that fit this category and are now offered in great trendy designs and colors. Your options vary depending on the industry that you are in -more relaxed or intense business.  When in doubt, choose the most conservative…And YES, you do have to still polish your shoes! March was National Optimism Month, National Employee Spirit Month, and National Listening Month, then we have April, which is National Humor Month. I will be humoring UP at the National Conference for Applied and Therapeutic Humor in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Anaheim</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">CA</st1:State></st1:place> -- and look forward to learning the latest research in how laughter benefits health and wellness.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> There are three key UPs that we will cover today — Look Up, Pep Up and Listen Up. So here we go! We have our work cut out for us this spring! Each of these concepts affects our measure of success with regards to our relationships, health, happiness and productivity.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> LOOK UP <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Whether the glass is half full or half empty, who cares? Woo-hoo! There’s water to quench your thirst! <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> According to the American Medical Journal, over 84% of all hospitalizations are due either directly or indirectly to stress – having a positive attitude today is not only a sales magnet and good business, but it’s imperative to our health.   Stress thrives on negativity. Research today shows that a cancer patient who thinks negatively and thinks of chemo as a ‘toxin’ going in his body, will have a much different result from the treatment than a cancer patient who views cancer as ‘Liquid grace”.  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p>  Being positive truly is a life survival skill. In our book “Burnt Toast & Jam” we relate that Life’s Burnt Toast appears in many ways, and always the best way to survive embarrassing, annoying or heartbreaking events, is by focusing on the good; using humor skills and gratitude.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I loved hearing this recently:<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> A lady woke up one morning shocked to find only 3 hairs on her head.<o:p></o:p> What to do? She decided to make a braid with them; and, went on to have a wonderful day.<o:p></o:p> The next day she woke up to find only 2 hairs left on her head.<o:p></o:p> What to do? She decided make a part down the middle; and went on to have a wonderful day.<o:p></o:p> The third day she woke up to find just one hair left.<o:p></o:p> What to do? She decided to put it in a pony tail; and, went on to have a wonderful day.<o:p></o:p> The fourth day she woke up and had no hair at all.<o:p></o:p> She exclaimed: Thank goodness! Now I don’t have to spend all that time doing my hair!<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Remember: Only 10% of life is what we are dealt; 90% is how we respond.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> PEP UP <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Get excited!  Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." Enthusiasm is the feeling of excitement and eagerness that propels action. The opposite is something we see far too much — indifference. Both are contagious. One results in success; the other is mediocrity. The image of one being enthusiastic sends a message of confidence, eagerness to achieve, and a resounding ability to influence or lead others. Enthusiasm is probably the most important element of personal and team spirit.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In order to be enthusiastic, one has to act with enthusiasm. The truth of the matter is that you FEEL the way you act. If you act tired, you will feel tired. Act excited; you will feel excited. Being enthused is a state of mind. It can be generated with self-talk and positive thinking. When you get up in the morning, say to yourself, "It’s going to be a good day!" You will be committing to a self-fulfilling prophecy.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> More tips for getting ENTHUSED:<o:p></o:p> ·        Exercise regularly and eat healthy — your energy will soar. <o:p></o:p> ·        Count your blessings — say them out loud or write them down. <o:p></o:p> ·        Set goals — this will help you focus on what’s important. <o:p></o:p> ·        Make a list of past accomplishments — you’ll be amazed how far you’ve come. <o:p></o:p> ·        Have a sense of purpose. <o:p></o:p> ·        Help someone.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> "Think of enthusiasm like jam; spread it everywhere you can.<a name="_A_SHORT_COURSE_IN_HUMAN_RELATIONS"></a><o:p></o:p> .<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> LISTEN UP <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> How many times have you been in a conversation and at the end of it, you don’t have a clue what the other person just said? Worse yet, how many times have you sold your idea and then because you kept talking, you killed the sale? Okay, so why is this so hard for us? The process is pretty simple:  <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> 1. Ask questions.<o:p></o:p> 2. Sh-h-h. Listen to the reply. <o:p></o:p> 3. Remember what they said. (Jot down notes and names to refer to later.)   <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Good listeners often attract people like honey does to bees. People will remember having the greatest time with you when they see you respond with interest, enthusiasm or encouragement to what THEY were saying.
