STRESSED OUT?  – GET LAUGHING!

Whether life is dealing you more than your share of burnt toast or you just having a woe-is-me kind of day, there are times when laughing just isn’t on your list. There is no question that there are days when it seems like the world has dumped on you – whether you lost your job, dealing with illness, spilled milk, or a multitude of other things. Why should you laugh? And, what exactly can do you do to knock yourself out of the doldrums and put the twinkle back in your eye?

We know that laughing makes a multitude of good things happen physiologically to the human body, it makes us healthier, feel better and help bridge relationships — and makes us more productive. It can also help make tough times a little easier and help us to cope.   Interestingly, over ¾ of terminally ill patients said they wished their family members and caregivers used more humor. Here’s some tips to help spark up and hone your funny bone.

-         Take some thing and give it a funny name — breakroom: whine cellar;  flashlight: dead battery holder; desktop: flat filing cabinet.

-         Be silly — think absurd; stretch your thoughts; how would you redefine a situation comically.

-         Start your collection of funny things — favorite jokes, a clown nose, bubbles to blow, a crazy tie or accessory. What always lifts you up?

-         Share some favorite one-liners — "I used to be Snow White but I drifted"   "A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you are in deep  water." (Samples from our popular Chuckle Bags.)

Laughter – It does a body good.

DUMP MULTI-TASKING – EEK!

Multi-tasking has become a way of life for so many of us. How can we get everything done without it? According to new research, much better.

In her researched-based book : Conquer Cyberoverload, Joanne Cantor,PH D. is giving us the heads up: Our brains were not made to multi-task.  According to molecular biologist, John Medina, when we dual task- we are giving it our half. When we multi-task , our attention is split up into pieces, nothing gets our 100% attention, instead our brain is busy  task switching back and forth, taking turns zoning out.

While we may think we find multi-tasking stimulating, a UCLA study shows it results in a lower level of understanding. Whether it is that project at work, a customer or our children, we zone out.  The consequences of this is lower productivity and much higher stress levels.

-         Be Aware.   When you feel yourself being pulled in different directions, take a deep breath, prioritize and focus on the priority.   Be present in the moment. Give that moment 100% of your attention. If you are saying “Now where was I?” you are task switching too much.

-         Resist the urge. Much like overcoming any addiction, learn to resist the urge! The internet is adept at sucking us in  to web browse, check scores, YouTube or constantly check emails. Whatever your attraction is, set a structured time when you will be able to catch up those things.  Develop trust and patience.  The information will not go away. They will still be there tomorrow.  The thirst for instant information can become habit forming and holds consequences.

-         Schedule self-induced blackouts – Intel now schedules one morning a week where incoming mail is shut down and employees minds are freed up to focus on tasks at hand. Set times for your own blackouts. Rather than constantly being connected, check your emails and/or phone messages every 2 hours.  For those "must have connections," create separate email address.

How sweet is the single task.!

DUMP THE TIME SUCKERS

Beware of  time suckers.  A time sucker might be an old habit, a routine you do just because you’ve always done it that way,  an outgrown organization or it could even be a person. Time suckers will suck your energy and give very little in return.  Re-evaluate.  It may be time to move on

We will not be receiving any more time..

Use yours wisely.

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR CHILDREN?

We tell our child not to hit. Then we allow them to sit in front of a screen and train their brains to hit, abuse and kill. What kind of parents would do that? Not many if they understood the harm it was doing to their kids.

When an area of the brain called premotor cortex sees an action performed, it prepares to perform that same action. It’s what makes a baby return mommy’s smile. When one watches television or computer games, the same things happens. If it is violence and hostility, mirror neurons in our brains practice those actions and a pathway is created.

How’s that for a scary thought? Remember, this also includes all of those sexual scenes and innuendos that we think our kids don’t ‘catch. For more on this topic, read Joanne Cantor’s book Conquering CyberOverload.

Part of our brain works hard to imitate what it sees.

What has your child watched today?

WORKPLACE FUN/SPREADING THE SPIRIT

n      De-stress. Take a humor walk. If you can go outside for it, even better.  How many funny things can you find?  Call it a “Humor Challenge” and have participants submit lists. Post winning entries.

n      Department having a high stress day? Proclaim a 5-minute shoulder roll break —to move & relax those shoulders, provide carrots to crunch. (Stress tends to settle in the jaw.)

THE "FYI" CORNER

TOP STRESS REDUCING FOODS: Milk, blueberries, almonds. tuna; asparagus, beef (yep, for stress reduction benefits lean beef is recommended), Corn Flakes & rice cereal.

THE BEST TIME FOR A MEETING: When are people most alert and creative? According to Dr. Ronald Berk, Biostatistics and Measurement expert,  if you want the best time to boost productivity, highest rate of LPM (laughs per minute), and over-all retention,  you want to schedule your meeting during the late morning hours between 10:00 and 12:00.
