AMERICA, LEADERSHIP & YOU

One night at a Marquette Basketball game, I had the privilege of being one of three singers to sing the opening National Anthem. What an honor that was! And, it really wasn’t that hard. You see, there were the two professional singers on the floor and then the voice came over the loudspeaker: Will you all please join in? And I did.

As I gazed about the arena that night, there were many kids there and many, many adults. They were chatting and crunching popcorn, mostly oblivious to the patriotic tribute. As I looked around, I couldn’t help but think - WHERE were the leaders??? Who was setting an example? Who was doing the right thing?

Our country needs all of us to step up to the plate and speak out. The next time you hear the Star Spangled Banner suck it up, and belt it out—proudly and boldly. And yes, when that Flag passes by, the right hand goes over the heart.

From sea to shining sea, from workplace to workplace

From family to family, from each of you to each of me;

Be proud that we stand free, be  a leader for all to see

BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL POWER

The English language offers zillions of words, yet most of us rely on the same old standbys to get us through the day. The next time you need to make a point, close a deal or increase your impact, here are a few choices to set you apart from the crowd.

Remarkable...Absolutely…Expertise   Definitely   Brilliant   Abundant   Phenomenal
Expands   Alters   Compels   Zealous   Unequivocal   Masterful   Up Front

Need to sell or convince? When they are accurate and true, try these:

Unmatched Performance   Remarkable Results   Accomplishes   Prevents
High Impact   The Plain Truth   Mind Blowing   Dynamite   Will Never Let You Down

Visionary   Precision Engineered   Our Proven Method   Nitty Gritty   Just the Facts
Let’s Be Honest About…

Your words define your character….and perhaps your bank account.

LEAVING A LEGACY

When I was speaking to an organization of Senior Americans on how to leave a meaningful legacy, I shared with them the fact that in our generation seminars, their age group, has already been acclaimed as the Great Generation. WOW! This is an attribute they can be proud of. The motto given to their generation—Do It Big and Do It with Honor—speaks volumes for the Legacy they are leaving for future generations.

So what can be done on a personal level to impact the lives of our youth? I’ like to share the following story of a dear friend of mine.

My friend’s grandson had been asked to write a college paper about someone who had most influenced his life (outside of his own parents). He wrote on his Grandfather. It seems his Grandpa Jim had taken him out for a boat ride one summer day shortly after his high school graduation. Grandpa then cut the motor and gave his grandson a present. It was a plaque with the poem—What it means to be a Man. It turned into much more than just a boat ride. Jim and his grandson had a meaningful conversation as they discussed what the words on the plaque meant and Grandpa explained the meanings of words like integrity and honor.

Now, several years later, that framed copy of this poem hangs on a wall outside the door of a man named Jim, in an Alzheimer’s ward.

In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.

THE "FYI" CORNER

WORKPLACE FUN – SPARKING THE SPIRIT

é Surprise! Decorate the rest rooms with some red, white and blue  balloons

é Employees bring their favorite summer or 4th of July child-hood picture. Post them and play—Can you identify these kids?

DON’T FREEZE THOSE WATER BOTTLES. According to Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Castle Hospital, dioxin carcinogens cause cancer, especially breast cancer. (Guys, that includes you). Freezing your bottles of water to keep them cold for use releases the dioxin which is in the plastic.

SUPPORT AMERICA. Read labels. Choose Made in the USA. The job you save, may be your own, ie., Colgate toothpaste is made in Mexico/ Crest is made in the USA.  Bounce is made in Canada/ others are cheaper and made in the USA; Ace sells hose connectors:made in USA.
